lack of association between tumor necrosis factor-alpha -308 g/a polymorphism and risk of developing late-onset alzheimer's disease in an iranian population

abstract

late-onset alzheimer's disease (load) is a neurodegenerative disorder and the most common form of dementia affecting people over 65 years old. alzheimer’s disease is a complex disease with multi-factorial etiology. inflammation has been approved to have an important role in the pathogenesis of alzheimer’s disease (ad). tnf-a is a main pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays an essential role in initiation and regulation of inflammatory responses. several studies have shown the probable association of polymorphism at tnf-a gene’s promoter with ad pathogenesis. this study was performed to determine whether this polymorphism contributes to the risk for late-onset alzheimer's disease (load) in iranian population. one hundred and forty ad patients and 158 healthy controls were recruited in the study. following extraction of genomic dna, using pcr/rflp methods the genotype and allele frequencies were determined in case and control subjects. the statistical analysis showed no significant difference in the allele and genotype frequencies due to this polymorphism between the two groups. also after stratifying the subjects by their apoe-e4 status, no significant association was observed. our results suggest that tumor necrosis factor-alpha (tnf-?) -308 g/a is not a risk or protective factor for late-onset alzheimer’s disease in iranian population. however, to confirm these results further study with a bigger sample size may be required.

Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha -308 G/A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and Risk of Sperm Abnormalities in Iranian Males

Objective Signaling molecules such as cytokines regulate spermatogenesis during the maturation of germ cells and apoptosis. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) is one of the most-documented cytokines that supports spermatogenesis. We investigated the association of TNFα -308 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism with sperm abnormalities in Iranian population. MaterialsAndMethods This case control study in...

association of tumor necrosis factor alpha 308 g/a polymorphism with asthma in pakistani population

asthma is a chronic inflammatory and remodeling disorder of the airways, in which many cells, cellular elements, and cytokines play important roles. the role of tumor necrosis factor- α (tnf-α) in asthma is unclear in pakistani population. the aim of this study was to assess the relationship between tnf-α -308 polymorphism and asthma.polymorphism of tnf-α (g-308-a locus; rs 1800629) in 329 asth...

Lack of association between adult asthma and the tumour necrosis factor alpha-308 polymorphism gene.

Tumour necrosis factor (TNF)alpha is a cytokine endowed with potent inflammatory properties that may contribute to airway inflammation in asthma. It has previously been shown that the single base pair polymorphism-308 (G to A substitution) in the promoter of TNFalpha gene results in enhanced cytokine secretion. Whether this polymorphism is associated with the presence of phenotypic expression o...

Evaluation of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Polymorphism Frequencies in Endometriosis

Background The pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), is a pathogenic element for a number of disorders. Previous studies have reported that the -1031 T/C and -238 G/A polymorphisms in the promoter region of the TNF-α gene are important factors in reproductive-related disorders. One of the most common gynecological diseases of women during the reproductive years is endo...
